Dante’s Use of Animals In The Inferno

Animal allegories have been used in literature since the begging of time. These animals can be used in many different ways. Dante utilizes various animals in his famous work The Inferno. He compares and even shapes his sinners into the animals. These comparisons depict why theses sinners are in Hell. Dante uses the idea of contrapasso. Contrapasso is when the punishment resembles the sin its self. During their lifetime these sinners were irrational and did not think before they acted like a beast would. Due to this they are now compared to actual beasts in Hell. Dante portrays the sinners in Hell as animals rather than humans because their sins have made them “beast like”.
Dante’s work has several allegories and one of the biggest is his use of animals. He uses the animals to portray the sinners in Hell. These sinners are in Hell because they sinned sometime during their life span. Some of the sinners included thieves, fraudulent, and barterers. Depending on their sin they are placed into a certain level of Hell. As Dante describes each level he uses harsh beast like animals to describe these sinners. Dante says in canto twenty-two that, “ at the edge of a ditch the bullfrogs sit with only their snouts showing, hiding their feet and thick bodies” (line 25). Although it may seem like it, Dante is not actually talking about bullfrogs sitting at the edge of the ditch he is in fact referring to the sinners. These sinners are those who exploited public office with corruption and bribery and they are now forced to boil in a pitch in Hell. Dante writes that these barterers are as bullfrogs because they are sitting in the bank of a pitch as a bullfrog would. Also Dante refers to these sinners as bullfrogs rather than humans, because they are no longer considered humans due to their horrible sins. These sinners are no longer considered humans in the eyes of Dante because once someone has sinned they are more as an animal than a human. Dante uses many harsh animals to describe the sinners as animals instead of humans such as boars, birds, dogs, horses, hawks, bulls, and many more.
In canto twenty-seven Dante writes, “ While I was the form of bone and flesh that my mother gave me, my works were not those of a lion but a fox” (line 73).  This canto is the eighth pouch of the eighth circle of Hell. In this level the people are being punished for being fraudulent and contradictory during their lifetime. The sinners in this level are compared to foxes that are known as sneaky animals. An example of this can be seen in Dora the Explorer, the fox is the sneaky one who always steals everything from Dora. This is contrapasso because the sinners were sneaky in their lifetime and now they are considered as sneaky foxes in Hell.
Dante even goes as far to actually turning some of the sinners into snakes themselves. In canto 25 Dante says “ From then on Snakes have been my Friends, because one of them wrapped itself around his neck” (line 4). These sinners, or thieves, were punished by snakes tightly wrapping around them. The sinners and snakes soon switched bodies causing humans to become snakes. This is contrapasso due to the fact that snakes are thieves in nature because they steal eggs and in the sinners lives they were thieves. The snakes can also be considered a biblical allusion. This is because a serpent told eve to steal the apple in Adam and Eve. This snake is what lead eve to commit the first sin of humans.
Dante the author of The Inferno applied many interesting aspect to his story of Hell. One of the most notable would have to be his extensive use of animals. He utilizes these animals in very abstract ways. Dante uses harsh beast like animals to depict the sinners as beasts themselves due to their terrible sins. These added animals make The Inferno more in depth and exciting to read.

Television Violence

War, fighting, blood, and violence are all televised nationally in today’s society. This violence in television affects our society immensely. Television violence promotes and creates violence in the community. This violence affects all people but it tremendously puts pressure the younger generations. Children are shaped by what they see and hear and if they see violence on the TV than they will soon believe that violence in the real world is okay. In society today children’s innocence is being taken away from them at a very early age. Shows of violence on television promote kids to have violent lives themselves. Not only do television shows promote violence but the media does as well.
Television shows such as wars, fighting, murders, and many more promote the idea to children that violence is accepted. Images from the screen influence children’s experiences in the real world. This is because kids copy behaviors from the television for example they mimic the actions of the  “Guidos” from The Jersey Shore and the violence from shows such as CSI. There has always been violent TV but it has not become widely popular until recently. Violence has recently become mainstream, where even family channels now have showings. “Many of the movies seen at home today wouldn't have been shown in theaters 10-20 years ago” (Anderson). Also violence has evolved to become more bloody and realistic than the past years due to advancing technology. In reaction to this increasing violence in television “Violent crimes have increased by more than 560 percent since 1960” (Anderson).
“The average child watches 8,000 televised murders and 100,000 acts of violence before finishing elementary school” (Anderson). This amount of television violence impacts children’s lives massively. It is hard for young children to determine right from wrong and this is why the television violence has the largest impact on them. Children will eventually come to think that this violence is correct and they will then turn around and become violent themselves. The average child watches around four hours of television a day (AACAP). This large number is partially why kids are affected so much by what is shown on the TV. The Television is watch so frequently that it starts to become the child’s reality.
The Media is a massive cause of the violence amongst the younger generations. The media promotes violence due to the fact that it sells. Today’s society is obsessed with hearing about the violence in the world, but in fact showing this violence only creates more aggression amongst the society. The news channel is all about murders, wars, robbery, and other violent acts. These real world acts watch by adolescents influence them to perform the act themselves. This influence starts at a very young age. “University of Illinois psychologist Leonard Eron studied children at age eight and then at eighteen. He found that television habits established at the age of eight influenced aggressive behavior through childhood and adolescent years” (Anderson). He then concluded “the effect of television violence on aggression is cumulative”.
Violence in television needs to come to an end. It is creating a more aggressive youth and in the long run going to hurt our society. The television and media needs to become more regulated to where less or no violence is broadcasted. If this is done than the violent acts in the society will lessen. It will also make our society and overall better place to live.

casting

For the Parson I chose to cast reverend Shaw Moore, from the movie footloose and played by Dennis Quaid. I chose to pick him because this man is truly religious like the parson. This can be seen by the fact that he is a reverend at a church. He also feels that he is suppose to lead the people in the right direction, he does this by passing many laws in the town including the one that it is illegal to dance. He passes this for the safety of the towns kids. The Parson is supposed to guide the people like Jesus guides his flock of sheep. “He was rich in holy thought and work… who truly knew Christ’s gospel and would preach it” (lines 489, 491) in the movie reverend Shaw Moore goes around the town and church preaching his holy thought about what should be right and wrong to do in a town, such as dancing.
For the Host I chose Jeff Probst from survivor. Jeff Probst is the host of the reality tv show survivor, just at the host is the host of the pilgrimage. “A very striking man our host withal” (line 769). Jeff is also a very striking man like the host is. Also Jeff is “bold in his speech, yet wise and full of tact” (line 773) like the host is. This can be seen when he announces the challenges, he is very bold yet he is also wise with what he is saying. Also Jeff is the one who presents the challenges to the competitors just like how the host presents the challenge of story telling to the people of the pilgrimage.

For the Friar (Hubert) I chose Hue Hefner. “he knew the taverns well in every town and every innkeeper an barmaid too better than lepers, beggars and that crew” (lines245-247) this says that the Friar know more women and bars more than the sick and poor, like the Friar, Hue Hefner likes women and partying more than helping the poor. Hue Hefner always has many women around just like the friar. “He’d fixed up many of marriage, giving each of his young women what he could afford her” (line 217) meaning that the Friar has sex with the young beautiful women and then sells them. Hue Hefner lives in the playboy mansions which he is with many women at one time, and because of this the women can live for free at the house.

Guide for Hell

If I were to go into Hell I would choose my sister, Kaley, as a guide. Although she is not well versed in the levels of Hell I can trust her. I believe that trust is the most important aspect when choosing someone to go into Hell with. This is because you would not want the person to turn on you and stab you in the back. Also I would choose my sister because then the journey would be more enjoyable, than if I brought a person who I just met such as Dante had just met Virgil. It would be more enjoyable because my sister and I both have the same views on Hell and the afterlife, this would make it easier to talk and discuss the things that we see and experience. Kaley knows as much as I do about hell, so she wouldn’t be much of a guide, it would be more us experiencing and learning about hell together by asking and exploring in every circle.

Beo and the City

It was a sunny Monday morning and Hrothgar was making his rounds as usual. As Hrothgar arrived at his first house he was prepared to deliver the packages. Everything went as planned and he successfully completed his mission. Although the next few times went smoothly, it would soon become a disaster.
The next day the news-bearer made his rounds just as he did the day before. Although this time it was not as easy as slipping envelopes into boxes, a vicious tail-wagger was threatening the mail-carrier. Hrothgar was a tall and skinny man that always wore his hat and carried a clip board.
As the new-bearer approached the house he could hear the beast. “rough, rough” Hrothgar was nervous about this sound but continued anyways to complete his daily routine. He should have turned back when he could but instead he got closer and closer to the house and then it happened.
The tiny-yapper attacked. Hrothgar screamed, “ Get away from me! Don’t hurt me!” But the vicious animal continued his attack. As the tiny-yapper got closer Hrothgar spotted a name tag, and his name was Grendel. So he tried screaming again “No Grendel, No Grendel!” But Grendel kept coming towards him, he was furry, foaming at the mouth, and had a studded collar on.
Hrothgar couldn’t stop the Postman-chaser. Grendel came and bit Hrothgars pant leg and started shaking his head frantically.
Hrothgar commanded, “Grendel let go now!”
            All Grendel responded was “Grrrrrrrr!”
Hrothgar finally shook the tail-wager off and ran back to his mail-truck. Hrothgar thought to himself, “ I got away this time, but tomorrow I’m going to need back up.” Hrothgar was nervous because his mail delivery business was being threatened by this mighty tail-wager, Grendel. So that night he went home with the goal of finding a solution.
As he go home he opened the big yellow book of everything called the yellow pages, and searched for a solution. He came across Bewoulf Animal Control and decided that this was the guy to help him. He called Beowulf’s number right away.
Beowulf answer, “Hello, Beowulf Animal Control, Beowulf speaking. How may I help you?”
Hrothgar said, “ Hi, this is Hrothgar and I need your expertise, because a tail-wager, Grendel, is attacking me and threatening my business.”
Beowulf replied, “ Well of course I would be happy to help, I will meet you tomorrow on your rounds.”
The next morning Hrothgar waited for the Beowulf. As Beowulf arrived in his stylish car, Hrothgar admired him. Beowulf was strong, handsome, and was extremely confident in himself. Beowulf stepped out of the car and was ready for the battle with the Postman-chaser. He had brought with him a rope and a cage to trap the postman-chaser.
“Okay, show me where he is” ordered Beowulf
            “He’s over there!” Hrothgar pointed.
“Ill take care of him.” Beowulf stated
            “I can help!” Hrothgar said.
“No I must do this on my own.” Beowulf commanded
Beowulf stormed toward Grendel and used his rope to try to catch him, although it seemed that the rope could trap the tail-wager. So instead Beowulf had to use his hands to scope up Grendel and trap him in the cage.
“ You’re my hero!” Thanked Hrothgar
            “Anytime.” Welcomed Beowulf.

Island Story

I woke up to water crashing on top of me. I was sandy and confused the last thing I had remembered was hearing the pilot on the intercom say “Brace for landing!”
I was frozen from shock, the realization that I crashed landed on a what looked like an empty island drew me to tears.
I came to my feet. I finally got a good look at the wrecked plane. It was torn to pieces, how could I have lived, but I had to search the plane to make sure.
I planned to search the plane for all I could find clothes, metals, ropes, anything that would be useful. Hours and hours went by, and all I could find was an ipod, suitcase, and a book. I found no one alive. I started to lay out everything I found. The ipod had one album on it of course it was country that would be no help. The suitcase has clothes, a toothbrush, and deoterant in it, this would be helpful if I cared at all about my hygiene at the moment. The book was pointless because it was in German, the plane was on its way to Germany and I was one of the only Americans on board.
I sat, covered in sand, staring off into the horizon. I must think of a plan B. I must now go into the depths of the forest hoping to find civilization. I turned my focus from the ocean to the trees, and to my disbelief there was smoke! It was approximately one mile away. I ran and ran, forgot about my injuries, and there was a since of happiness. There was life on this island. If felt as if it took me hours to get there.
As I reached the spot were the smoke was coming from, it was empty no life other than the freshly made fire, a few bags, and man made tent. Crunch! I heard leaves behind me. “Hello?”

Riddle

I come in all colors
Different shapes and sizes
Thick or thin it is to your liking

I run across paper
And have a controller
I speak your mind,
And never my own

I create your creativity,
Into a picture
But don’t get upset
When I run out of liquid

What am I?

College Essay

Determined to ride a bike but fell and scraped my knee – determined to climb a brick wall but fell and bruised my shin – determined to slide down a sand dune but fell and broke my nose. Growing up this was the story of my life, always getting hurt. People joked around and called me clumsy but it is in fact my determination. I was determined to make it across the monkey bars in fifth grade, but fell and broke both wrists.
“The Wild Child,” that’s what they called me. Now you are probably thinking how will this characteristic contribute to a dedicated student. Many may call this a downfall, but in fact it is a positive attribute. Determination is the drive to success. This drive has shaped my life and made me who I am today. It has pushed me to new limits and new accomplishments. Ever since I was a child I pushed myself to try new things and be successful in everything I do, even if that means failure. But after failure comes success.
Dance is my life, releasing my extra energy through an artistic form is liberating. Although, of course, with my can-do attitude, I took it upon myself to participate in cheerleading, cross-country, soccer, and track and field. With school and sports, I had a chaotic schedule, and I loved that. Until one day, during my junior year, I was determined to successfully do an aerial (or a no handed cartwheel) and it did not go as planned. Failure is a part of life and you have to keep moving on and pushing through struggles, although this time it hit me hard. I landed, twisted my knee, and tore my ACL. Hearing the news that I had get surgery and couldn’t play sports until the next year was a devastating blow.
I was confused; what should I do? No sports? No more busy schedule? For a few weeks, I did all I had left, schoolwork. But I always pushed myself into AP classes even before I hurt my knee. So I was lost, thinking there was nothing else to do because I could not participate in sports any longer.
“I’m glad it was you Jade, because I know you won’t let it get you down and you will over come it,” one of my coaches said. Of course, he was not wishing this upon me, but he knew I would not let this stop me. He got me thinking I do not need to be participating in the game to be in the game. I started supporting my teammates by attending the games and cheering them on, learning a new level of dedication to my teammates, which can apply to anything I put my mind to.
It is necessary for a student to be dedicated to their schoolwork and outside activities. My ability to adapt will bring much to the University of Florida campus. I am ready for life’s new struggles and challenges. Like Tristan Loo once said, I can’t stop the negative events, but I can control my reaction.

About Me

Hello, my name is Jade. Some interesting facts about me are that im a senior at LMP, my favorite colors are purple and blue, and I am a dancer.
